Setup using Kanopy Website

1) To create an account on Kanopy, go to cresskill.kanopy.com.

2) Click “Sign up”.

3) Create your Kanopy account by clicking on one of the social login buttons (Facebook or Google), or by entering your first and last name, email address, and password.

If you sign up with your email address, you will be sent a verification email to your email address. This email will come from kanopy@kanopy.com. Click “Verify My Email” to continue your account set up.

Note: If you are not seeing this email in your inbox or spam, please contact support@kanopy.com so they can help you with this.

4) Click “Add library card”.

5) Enter your library card number and click Save.

6) Once your library card has been successfully connected, you will then be shown information about how your account works. Click Watch Now at the bottom of the page to begin watching.

You are now set up! When you are signed into your account, you can access your User Dashboard from the top right. On the Dashboard, you can manage your personal profile details, Watchlist, recently watched films, comments, and more. You can see more on the features of the user profile here.

Supported Desktop Browsers and Systems

Here's a guide to which browsers and computer platforms are supported by Kanopy:

N/S: This browser/system combination is Not Supported or recommended for use.

Important:

The Kanopy website may still function and play back videos, even in configurations that are labelled as Not Supported, but we highly recommend that you update your system in order to ensure the best viewing experience.

Setup for iOS Devices

Get the app:

In order to use the app, you will need a Kanopy account that has an active library membership. If you do not have one, follow the instructions below.

1) Create a Kanopy account

When you open the Kanopy app you will presented with welcome screens. Swipe through these and tap on “Sign Up”. Enter your first and last name, email address, and password, or click on the Facebook or Google social login button to create your account, then Sign Up. You will receive a verification email at the address you used to sign up - click the link in the email to verify your address.

2) Add your library

Follow the prompts on the app to choose your library and add your card information, or sign in via your college/university log in if connecting through an academic library. Once your information has been successfully added, you’ll be able to proceed to watch the films on the app.

In order to use the Kanopy app, you will need to be running at least Apple iOS 9.

Setup for Android Devices

Install the app:

In order to use the app, you will need a Kanopy account that has an active library membership. If you do not have one, follow the instructions below.

1) Create a Kanopy account

Setup for Amazon Fire Tablets

Install the app:

In order to use the app, you will need a Kanopy account that has an active library membership. If you do not have one, follow the instructions below.

1) Create a Kanopy account

When you open the Kanopy app you will presented with welcome screens. Swipe through these and tap on “Sign Up”. Enter your first and last name, email address, and password, or click on the Facebook or Google social login button to create your account, then Sign Up. You will receive a verification email at the address you used to sign up - click the link in the email to verify your address.

2) Add your library

Follow the prompts on the app to choose your library and add your card information, or sign in via your college/university log in if connecting through an academic library. Once your information has been successfully added, you’ll be able to proceed to watch the films on the app.

Watching Kanopy on Apple TV and Airplay

To download the app, go to the App Store on your Apple TV, search for Kanopy and install the app.

When you first open the Kanopy app, you will be able to browse content, but not play the films. In order to play, you will need to link your Kanopy account. To do this:

  1. Select any film and press play.
  2. Click on “Link My Account”. Further instructions will appear on your TV screen (and are outlined in Steps 3-5).
  3. Go to kanopy.com/link using a computer or mobile device. If you are not signed into your account, you will be prompted to do so before you can enter the code.
  4. Enter the code displayed on the left side of your TV screen.
  5. Click Submit.

If the linking is successful, the message will change on your TV screen to let you know that you can select “Watch Now” with your Apple TV remote to start viewing films. Once this is complete, you will be able to start viewing films on your Apple TV.

Kanopy can only be used on devices that have access to an app store (4th generation Apple TV and newer). The Kanopy app is available for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV (4th generation). If you are unsure of which model you own, you can check here.

Watching Kanopy on Amazon Fire TV

To get started, download the Kanopy app from the Amazon Fire TV store to your device. You will need a Kanopy account that is connected to a participating library in order to use the app. To learn how to do this, please go here. To access the Amazon Fire TV FAQs, click here.

The first time you open the app you will be able to browse content, however you will not be able to watch any films until you link your Kanopy account to your Fire TV device. To do this:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select “Link My Account”
  3. Go to www.kanopy.com/link OR to the “Link Your Device” section of the Kanopy iOS/Android/Fire Tablet app and enter the code that you see on your TV screen
  4. If the linking is successful, your TV screen will update to confirm that your account has been successfully linked
  5. Select “Start Watching”

If you have multiple memberships on your account you will always be connected to your default membership first. If you would like to access a different membership you will be able to select one on this screen. Once completed, select “Home” at the top of the screen to go back to the film selections and begin watching.

Watching Kanopy on Roku

To get started, follow the steps below to start watching Kanopy on your Roku! To access the FAQs, click here.

1) Create a Kanopy account

In order to watch Kanopy on your Roku device, you will need a Kanopy account that is connected to a subscribing library. If you don't already have one, learn how to create your Kanopy account here.

2) Set up your Roku

If you are new to Roku and have not yet set up your Roku device, please follow the Roku instructions.

3) Add Kanopy to your Roku

Once you have your Roku device and Kanopy account set up, add the Kanopy channel to your Roku by going to Streaming Channels > Search Channels, and search for Kanopy. Select Kanopy from the search results, then Add Channel. The Kanopy channel will now appear on your Roku’s home screen.

4) Link your Kanopy channel on Roku to your Kanopy profile

When you first open the Kanopy channel, you will be able to browse content, but not play the films. In order to play, you will need to link your Kanopy account. To do this:

  • Select any film and press play. This will trigger the linking process and display further instructions on screen (outlined in the following steps).
  • Go to kanopy.com/link using a computer or mobile device. If you are not signed into your account, you will be prompted to do so before you can enter the code.
  • Enter the code displayed on the left side of your TV screen.
  • Click Submit.

If the linking is successful, the message will change on your Roku to let you know that you can press the OK button to start viewing films. Once this is complete, you will be able to start viewing films on your Roku. If you need to generate a new code, click the back arrow button on the Roku remote and select the film again.

Watching Kanopy on Chromecast

Using the iOS/Android app

Before you start casting, please ensure:

  • Your smartphone or tablet is connected to the same WiFi network as your Chromecast device
  • You are logged into the Kanopy app on your smartphone or tablet with a valid library membership.

Tap the “Cast” button at the top right corner of the screen and select the Chromecast device that is connected to your television. Once the connection is established, your TV screen will display “Ready to cast”

Start playing a film on the app and it will be played via Chromecast on your TV screen.

Using a computer

  • Before you start casting, please ensure:You are using a Chrome browser on a computer that is connected to the same WiFi network as your Chromecast device
  • You are logged into your Kanopy account with a valid library membership

Click play on the film to display the video player options. The Cast icon will appear at the bottom right of the video player. Click the Cast icon, select your Chromecast device, and the film will start playing on your TV.

Please note that this icon will only appear when using a Chrome browser.

Streaming via VIZIO SmartCast is not currently supported.
